I remember my first photography class in college. Getting into the light room, projecting images onto paper, placing the paper into the developer and slowly seeing a black and white story manifest itself where nothing once was. It’s kinda magical.
Some of that magic is lost in digital photography, yet the art of storytelling in a single hue (and removing the distractions that sometimes color can create) is still powerful. This issue we dedicate to the art of the monochrome. From street photography in Ukraine to the steamy sidewalks of New York City, it’s clear that our community has a love for the geometry of the Urbanopolis many of us inhabit.
We’re also taking inspirations from some of the greats this month. Mapplethorpe’s flowers breathe life into the Flora work of Jozef Hipp and the mystery of Roscharch’s inkblot studies can be seen in the work of Tuba Korhan. There are so many black and white combinations that can be produced through Hipstamatic, so take page from The Tiny Collective and find the lens and film that best tells your story. As always, the goal is to inspire you to keep snapping.
