iSee: The Eyes of VII

Gotta Real Jonesin’
We’ve had a mad crush this spring for isee: The eyes of VII in the hands of Hipstamatic. The Boston exhibition featured works by an elite group of photojournalists, who lent their eyes and experience to a new creative outlet: Hipstamatic.
Isee is the brainchild of VII photojournalist Gary Knight and Eric Luden, owner of Digital Silver Imaging. Over a cigar and several beers, the two divined a gallery that showcased the ‘exhilarating freedom and spontaneity’ of Hipstamatic. 19 VII photographers and 100 photos later, isee has drawn crowds and international acclaim. Vii’s Ron Haviv commends this unique perspective on photojournalism: “The use of a tool familiar to the subject allows the photographer to reach a different level of immediacy and intimacy.”
That intimacy is absolutely reflected in isee. From Afghanistan to the Horn of Africa, Darth Vader to a grandparent’s favorite chair, these images capture the lives and careers of some of the world’s preeminent photojournalists. Vii photographer Peter DiCampo summed the show up perfectly: for him, shooting with Hipstamatic “returns me to photography’s original and vital purposes: self-exploration and remembrance.” — KC
