The grandiose of the capital of the british raj is still evident in every lane of kolkatta.

For a city isn’t what’s seen in the maps. It isn’t the popular symbols, no matter how iconic they may be, that define a city. Calcutta isn’t just the Howrah bridge, it’s ethnicity lies in the boy playing gulli cricket on the banks of the Hoogly river. Calcutta is the graffiti on it’s walls, the chaos in it’s streets. It’s story is one of old souls in modern surroundings, of the mundane easily overlooked moments that define everyday life. It’s the story of a city which is simply in peace with itself despite the juxtaposition of its old world history and modern projections existing in every corner. These black and white photos capture the colors of Calcutta in a way that brings to life the very heart of the city. These candid moments are shots on the iPhone 6s using the hipstamatic app, they bring forth the simple moments of the everyday life that sign the streets of Calcutta. About the photographer:

Rohit is one of Asia’s most prominent street photographers. Has been shooting the streets for over 18 years. An official Fuji X photographer, his photographs are often about contact with humans and basic living elements. He currently lives and works from India.
