Being a traveler rather than a TOURIST in your own country has never been an easy task. You have to be able to match your mood with the right destination, different each time as the mood constantly changes again and again.
Destination Athens. Chaotic and Nostalgic. Glorious and Haphazard. Ancient and Hip. All these in extreme dosage. That’s the city, the historical capital of Europe renowned the world over, which still keeps surprising me when I see it from above: I realize that actually looks like a cubist, concrete sculptural composition of huge proportions. In the street level, the most fascinating thing is when you are coming face to face in every corner with the landmarks and the statues of your schoolbook pictures.
Destination Thessaloniki. Greece’s second city and Youth Capital of Europe. Cosmopolitan and religious. Fashionable and rustic. Sophisticated and humble. Castles and umbrellas. Although this place is oozing a frantic party feeling, its melancholic aspect, hidden in various places all over the city, is what attracts me more. Destination small Greek island. No matter in which one. In any of them. It’s impossible not to over-emphasize the impact of the light. Places and destinations like these are actually where the light becomes a destination itself.
