Warm & Cuddly

Lensed
From the fields of Wisconsin to the streets of Wicker Park, CEO & co-founder of Hipstamatic, Lucas Buick, got his very own lens last year. Read below for insight into the man behind the lens.
What was the inspiration for the lucas lens? A couple of years ago, just as Hipstamatic was taking off, my wife bought me a pair of prescription sunglasses that made the world warm—literally, my own rose colored glasses. The Lucas AB2 lens was inspired by those glasses, and how warm the world looked when I wore them.
Any memorable lucas lens shots that standout? The Lucas AB2 lens is part of the Wicker Park HipstaPak, which includes a flash called Jolly Rainbo (named after a hipster dive bar that was down the street from my studio in Chicago in 2008). The problem with using the iPhone hardware flash for bar and nightlife shots is that they always end up looking overexposed—the flash is too intense and bright. The Jolly Rainbo actually brings back the midtones and corrects the problem. I’ve taken many great shots of the Hipstamatic team with the Wicker Park HipstaPak—some that will never see the light of social media, thankfully! However, the Wicker Park HipstaPak is definitely an all time favorite for me, and we all use photostream to share and comment on images that are too hot for Facebook.
What’s next? 2013 is going to be a big year for Hipstamatic as we focus on doing projects we’re passionate about, and sticking to our creative and photographic roots. I’m excited about the the quality and type of products we’re launching in the next several months. Stay tuned!
