Paul Martin is a writer & occasional photographer from Cape Town, South Africa. On a recent trip to Kruger National Park, he decided to try photographing African wildlife using only his iPhone and Hipstamatic.

“I wanted to take ‘contrary’ wildlife photographs, breaking every wildlife photography rule,” says Paul. “So no big camera, no super-long lens, and no color.

I used my favorite hipstamatic combo of Lucifer VI and blackeyes supergrain. I’m pleased with the results because they’re the first wildlife shots I’ve ever taken that don’t look like everyone else’s.

The only awkward bit is you’ve got to get pretty close with a naked iPhone – as the shot, on the following page, of my hand shows – and wild animals don’t co-operate all that keenly, so about fifty opportunities are missed for every one you can reach. But that’s the best thing about contrary wildlife photography; it’s contrary.”
