Stories Behind Hipstamatic Lenses

Photographer David Loftus works with the best chefs in the world, and collaborated with us on the Hipstamatic Loftus lens. Read below for more insight into the man behind the lens.

What was your inspiration for the loftus lens? I’ve shot food for years, particularly with Jamie Oliver, but also with people like Martha Stewart and Alainne Ducasse. I’ve also always shot their portraits, reportage of them working, and landscapes and scenics wherever they’ve travelled. I wanted a lens that would help create the ‘look’ of my work, not exactly, but give the softness and romance of it whether the snapper is taking a picture of his breakfast, his or her dog, or his or her view from the window. Some of the most popular names in fashion photography today are street style photographers, some of whom take high quality pictures with just their iPhone and apps like Hipstamatic.

Any memorable loftus lens shots that standout? I’ve loved watching with the lens and how people have often embraced it as their ‘standard’ lens. I see the tags on Instagram and feel so proud when I see a wonderful holiday food snap or an amazing black and white landscape taken with the lens.

I particularly like to combine the lens with the blackeys film. I was recently in the vineyards of California, and the lens was a joy with all the colors. Combining lens and film with Hipstamatic has to be its greatest feature, rather than just adding an effect afterward.
