The new year drops and with it comes the Desire to be better. To be more. To be new. All too often these lofty goals end in disappointment, not only in one’s self, but in the possibility of their reality. It’s as though not attaining a new personal goal makes us less of the person we were when we started. This is frustrating.

so this year, lets not desire to do more but instead do more of what we desire.

I’m challenging myself (and now you) to take 2018 as a practice year. Let’s focus on the things we enjoy and do more of it, because practice makes perfect. Let’s take a photo we love and turn it into a series. And then repeat it over and over again without fear of the mundane. Let’s take a recipe that we love and make it over and over again, tweaking it until it becomes a specialty of ours. Let’s schedule more time with the people we love and repeat it over and over again. Let’s eat more cake! in this issue, we explore desire as a theme. How we’re attracted to cultures and food, from India to Africa. Our attraction to color and our relationship with composition. We crossed off bucket list items and and challenged our comfort to create new art.

I hope you take something from this issue and let it be the base from which you continue through this year. This isn’t about setting goals but identifying moments, images, and thoughts that surface from the pages and embracing them repeatedly. Make sure to reach out to the photographers who inspired you and then submit your own work to our next issus of scene!
